Bed Sore Injuries Result From Nursing Home Neglect
Nursing home abuse and nursing home neglect is a tragic reality facing many American families. Nursing home abuse and neglect often results from the willingness of too many nursing home companies to maximize their profits at the expense of their patients' safety.
Some of the common acts of neglect that take place in nursing homes lead to bed sores. These bed sores can lead to serious and life threatening infections and are intolerable. Also known as decubitus ulcers, or pressure sores, these injuries are generally preventable. A bed sore that advances to later stages may eat through to the bone, leading to agonizing pain, infection, amputation, and even death.
When given appropriate care, many patients who are paralyzed or otherwise bedridden do not experience bed sore injuries. Appropriate care includes:
- Frequent inspections for signs of skin breakdown
- Using an air mattress to avoid pressure sores from developing
- Careful inspection of the skin and turning of the patient
- Frequent bathing
- Frequent inspections for signs that a decubitus ulcer is developing
Unfortunately too many nursing homes do not have appropriate safety policies and do not train their employees adequately to inspect and to keep their patients safe. When nursing homes put profits before the well-being of their patients, significant injury and death can occur.
