Reducing Avoidable Errors Not Only Protects Patients, But Also Decreases Medical Malpractice Claims
Mishkind Law Firm Co., L.P.A., Is an Advocate for Patient Safety
Some people think personal injury lawyers are just "sue happy." Others are of the opinion that the large number of medical malpractice claims has made it very expensive for doctors to practice, and the increased cost is putting physicians and hospitals out of business.
But, for many medical malpractice attorneys, the goal of taking on a case is not to make another dollar - the goal is to help protect consumers from harm. As consumer advocates, the attorneys at Mishkind Law Firm Co., L.P.A., are here to try to help prevent harm from occurring; when it does, we can help pick up the pieces. As patients ourselves, we would rather see avoidable errors reduced than have to bring a lawsuit on behalf of the medical malpractice victims who should never have been harmed in the first place.
A recent article published in Crain's New York Business is an excellent example of how, as medical care is improved, patient risk is reduced - to the benefit of everyone who has ever been a patient in a doctor's office or at a hospital. The article discusses how obstetricians in one New York hospital have taken steps to avoid making errors - and as a result have reduced medical malpractice claims by more than 99 percent. Steps taken include digitizing patient charts and progress records, hiring additional staff (including a safety nurse, several physician assistants and a laborist), and conducting safety drills to prepare for emergency situations, such as if a patient started to hemorrhage following labor.
Mishkind Law Firm Co., L.P.A., applauds these efforts and would like to see more hospitals and clinics take initiatives to improve patient safety and reduce avoidable errors. We are committed to making a difference for consumers, one consumer at a time. If the firm can save one life or prevent one catastrophic injury from occurring by proving to the medical community that improvements will help stop needless and avoidable errors from occurring, then we all can rest better at night.
