- Gentamicin ototoxicity: This powerful antibiotic has been linked with permanent damage to the inner ear, which can cause loss of the sense of balance and impaired vision. The drug is given intravenously to people in hospitals, nursing homes and home healthcare settings. The risks of gentamicin have long been known, but it continues to be used because it costs less than safer alternatives.
