Description of Case: 40-year-old female underwent hysterectomy. During hysterectomy, patient developed intraoperative complication requiring a sigmoid resection and creation of Hartmann’s pouch and end colostomy.
During attempted takedown of colostomy several months later, defendant physician failed to discover a leak at the time of the re-anastomosis. Subsequent to surgery, patient developed a colovaginal fistula. Patient required multiple hospitalizations and operations to treat the fistula.
