Description of Case: Decedent injured his leg at work. X-ray at local hospital raised concern about possible lytic lesion in the area of a proximal femur fracture. Pathologic fracture was considered. Defendant orthopaedic surgeon performed bone scan and did not further consider the possibility of cancer. Patient went on to develop a non-union of his fracture and was diagnosed 5 months later with a high grade osteosarcoma (osteoblastic or telangiectatic osteosarcoma). Despite aggressive chemotherapy, patient died.
