Description of Case: Medical malpractice action brought on behalf of male patient that presented with a history of progressive aortic stenosis and shortness of breath.  During attempted aortic valve replacement, patient suffered a cardiac arrest and a stroke.  Due to the injury, he suffered irreversible damage to his heart requiring a cardiac transplant.  Defense asserted that the complication was not due to any act of negligence and was an unforeseen complication of the surgery and that they saved the patient’s life.
